Business Operations Manager

Position Description Overview:
Our Savior Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Laurel, Maryland is seeking a full-time (32 hours) experienced multi-skilled Accountant reporting to the Senior Pastor to perform overall accounting and financial operations of the Church, overseeing the accounting of our Open Arms Childcare Center, and providing consolidated financial reports. The ideal candidate possesses strong skills and expertise in accounting, including knowledge and experience in G.A.A.P, internal and external audits, financial forecasting, managing financial risks and controls, and fiscal planning. The candidate must also be able to effectively supervise any accounting and financial staff and their respective tasks. This job offers the potential for a hybrid on-site/off-site workflow, for a very detailed and hands-on person.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Pastor, this position’s specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
Accounting:
Record, report and oversee accounting, including payroll, accounts payable,
accounts receivable, general ledger entries, 1099 reporting, and timely
consolidated financial statement preparation, working with the Finance Team
and OSLC Staff (OSLC includes both Church and Open Arms).
Ensure prompt and accurate month-end and year-end reconciliations and close
processes and compliance with OSLC and statutory requirements.
Provide financial information to OSLC Staff and Church Leaders to support the
development of ministry and operational budgets.
Determine the effect of potential business decisions on financial policies.
Formulate and enforce policies, procedures, and controls to maintain integrity in
financial reporting and minimize risk of error and fraud.
Develop, articulate, and implement approved financial plans to support OSLC
growth and ministry opportunities.
Collect, summarize, and interpret financial data to verify accuracy and to prepare
staff and materials to support audits or reviews, as necessary.
Support the annual financial planning process, providing guidance and the
subsequent execution of the OSLC annual budget.
Administer existing and define new procedures for OSLC Staff financial
requirements. Ensure compliance with financial regulations and laws.
Human Resources:
Provide leadership for staffing financial positions and general staffing support for OSLC positions including but not limited to:
Adhering to Human Resources staffing policies and procedures.
Attending OSLC Staff meetings to disseminate staffing information and ideas.
Providing staffing opportunities through ownership of new activities and projects.
Administering a comprehensive salary and benefits package.
Maintaining a work environment where staff is encouraged to pursue personal
and professional growth mutually beneficial to the individual and organization.
Supervising financial staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance OR current CPA (Certified
Public Accountant) OR current CMA (Certified Management Accountant) PLUS
3+ years of work experience (preferably recent)
OR Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Finance OR current CPB/CB (Certified
Public Bookkeeper) PLUS 5+ years of accounting work experience (preferably
recent)
OR Associate’s Degree in Accounting OR current CPB/CB (Certified Public
Bookkeeper) PLUS 7+ years accounting or bookkeeping work experience
OR 10+ years accounting or bookkeeping work experience (recent), ideally with
a church or non-profit organization.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Experience with Excel required; Familiarity with Designated and Restricted
funds, Consolidations and Quicken, preferred; Breeze Church Management
System, and ProCare optional.
Outstanding knowledge and understanding of applicable financial and staffing
laws and regulations.
Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, procedures, and policies.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, having the ability to explain
financial policies and procedures to accounting staff and OSLC leaders.
Ability to quickly adjust to complex organizational changes and fluctuations in
giving platforms, property acquisitions and leasing, and executive leadership
transitions.
Satisfactory completion of a background screening.
Compensation:
Annual salary (full-time) $39,000; assuming 32 hours/week, includes paid time off and health care benefits.
