A sermon based on John 12: 12-19, Rev. J. Orlando Flahn
This Sunday, just six days before Easter, the celebration of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, marks the beginning of the final act of this incredible drama, commonly known as Palm Sunday. As Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, rides on a donkey into the ancient holy city of Jerusalem, millions crowd the narrow streets to welcome and proclaim Him as their King. They spread their garments on the road, wave palm branches torn from trees, and shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord-the King of Israel!” (John 12:13).
But I wonder, what kind of King did they expect? Who did they believe Jesus was, and what did He come to do? The Hebrew word “Hosanna” literally means “Save now.” The people were searching for a savior, calling for Jesus to be their earthly king. Whether in the first or the 21st century, the human heart remains unchanged; the scene is still the same: Your King is coming. But what kind of King are you looking for?
