A sermon based on Luke 24:13-35, Rev. Dr. Jon Diefenthaler, Sr Pastor Emeritus, Our Savior Lutheran Church.
On Easter Sunday, we sing joyfully and triumphantly of Jesus who rose from the dead and swallowed up death forever. In our hearts, we embrace him as the living Lord. But then, we often return to a life of “business as usual.” Our concerns, anxieties, and doubts, continue to loom up in our minds. The hope with which Easter fills our hearts begins to fade.
It’s the reason that for us Easter is a fifty-day season in which our attention shifts from the empty tomb to what it means for us to be a “community of resurrection.”
In the Gospel text for this Sunday from Luke 24:13-35, Jesus comes alongside two downcast disciples on their homeward journey. While they do not recognize him at first, Jesus makes himself known as the living Lord by pointing them to what Scripture says about him. Their eyes are then opened and their faith in him is restored through the sacramental meal he shares with them.
