A sermon based on Jeremiah 33:14-16, Rev. Dr. Jon Diefenthaler, Sr Pastor Emeritus, Our Savior Lutheran Church.
The always-uplifting season of Advent begins this Sunday. There are three R’s that describe its purpose. Advent creates an opportunity to Restart our spiritual lives, to Refocus more of our attention on God and tune out the noise from the world around us, and to Renew our commitment to furthering the coming of God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.
To aid us in this regard, we will take a closer look at each of the first of the appointed Advent scripture lessons from the Old Testament. They highlight the words of the prophets Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Micah. Each of them became God’s mouthpiece among the people of their own time and uttered prophesies about the Messiah for whom they were still waiting.
Have you ever wondered why so many people, secular as well as religious, put Handel’s “Messiah” on their list of December activities? One of the chief reasons, I believe, is that the arrival of the Messiah as the Christ child born in Bethlehem foretold in the magnificent words of the Old Testament prophets, helps fulfill their longing for a better future for themselves and the world as it is at present. Maybe you are one of them. I know that I am.
