December 29, 2024: My Eyes Have Seen Your Salvation

A sermon based on Luke 2:22-40, Pastor J. Orlando Flahn.

This Sunday, December 29, we will celebrate the first Sunday after Christmas. Christmas Day is now in our rearview mirror, and maybe some of us will attend service this week showing our new beautiful sweaters and other clothing items received as gifts this year. In Luke’s Gospel this week, we see Jesus’ parents brought Him to the Temple in Jerusalem “to present Him to the Lord,” and there they met “a devout and righteous” elderly man called Simeon. Years before, God told Simeon he wouldn’t die till he’d seen the Messiah with his own eyes.

When Simeon discovered who this baby was, he took him in his arms and sang about the end of his life, having seen and held this child: “My eyes have seen Your salvation.” Indeed, this baby firmly held in Simeon’s arms is not just Simeon’s salvation but God’s gift of salvation coming to all the world for all peoples—including you and me.
