A sermon based on Luke 4:31-41, Rev. J. Orlando Flahn
In our reading last Sunday, God declared His kingdom arrived, and Jesus Christ, the long-awaited Messiah, was anointed to “preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Jesus told them, I am the One the prophet Isaiah predicted, and “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
In this week’s reading, Jesus moves from the synagogue in Nazareth, where He had been brought up and rejected by His hometown, to a synagogue in Capernaum, where He continues to teach. Now, as the Ruler of God’s new kingdom, He begins to exercise absolute authority in His doctrine and teaching, authority over demons, and authority over disease. They are amazed as they see Jesus walk in authority, and they confess, “For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
