A sermon based on Acts 2:42-47, Rev. J. Orlando Flahn
How does God define a healthy church? How does His vital sign read? Good sermons, great music, faithful giving, lovely building, and regular church attendance? No doubt, a local congregation cannot exist without these things. However, the quality and healthiness of a church are not measured by these alone. We cannot ignore the Biblical reality that God made us with a need to be in community with other believers.
What small community are you connected to? Many of us are often alone, although we go to church and belong to it. In our individualistic society, we have been conditioned by our culture to believe that we are better off by ourselves and think we do not need help or support or to be accountable to others. The Bible proves otherwise: God created people not to be isolated but to live in a community with others, ideally achieved through small groups. From the onset, right after the Day of Pentecost, the first church began to live in a community by connecting to small groups.
“They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers….And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common…”. Acts 2:42-43 – MSG
As a church, how well are we doing in doing life together in small groups?
