A sermon based on Luke 4:16-30, Rev. J. Orlando Flahn
Christ’s arrival in our fallen world ushered in God’s season of grace and redemption for all people. In this week’s Old Testament reading, Jesus, in His native town of Nazareth, stood in the Synagogue and read from Isaiah 61:1-2 and made this startling statement: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). It is a clear-cut declaration that He is the fulfillment of that messianic prophecy made by the prophet Isaiah. Jesus said I am the One this prophecy refers to. If you want to receive the good news, be free, receive your spiritual sight, and experience God’s favor, you must come to me. I am the appointed One that the Spirit of the Lord has anointed to preach the gospel, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty, heal the blind, free the oppressed, and proclaim God’s acceptable year. What a resounding claim! No wonder “all the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this and drove Him out of the town…to throw him off the cliff.” (Luke 4:29).
God has bestowed His season of special grace that offers freedom from the power of darkness through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Will you accept the invitation to live in His season of favor?
