A sermon based on Luke 10:38-42, Rev. Dr. Jon Diefenthaler, Sr Pastor Emeritus, Our Savior Lutheran Church
In Luke 10, a member of the less-than-friendly religious community sought to “test” Jesus by asking him about what he needed to do “to inherit eternal life.” When Jesus directed him to share what he thought as a legal expert, he correctly replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” and “love your neighbor as yourself.”
Seeking to justify himself on the basis of the law, however, this inquirer asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ reply was the “Good Samaritan” story.
In order to illustrate what it means to “love the Lord your God,” St. Luke in the Gospel for this Sunday went on to provide the story of Jesus’ visit to a more hospitable community, the family home of Mary and Martha.
